Troop 525 Information Sheet
Welcome Parents and AOLs!
Please feel free to ask us any questions. We know that it is important to understand how this troop is run so that you and your son can make a well-informed choice.
Here is some basic information about the troop:
- Boy Led and Adult Supervised
- Boy Led – Monthly activities are “thought up” by the Patrol Leaders. Patrols consist of boys of all ages. We want to give the new scouts the opportunity to learn from the older scouts and give the older scouts the opportunity to lead. Meetings and Courts of Honor are also run by the boys.
- Adult-Supervised - Parent Volunteers are always needed and required to keep the boys safe. Parents are needed to participate in the coordination of the scout activities, outings, and events. We encourage all parents to be involved and be a part of your son's scouting experience.
- Parent Meetings are held monthly but parents are always welcome to observe the troop activities.
- Outings are scheduled monthly which include camping, snow and water sports, bicycling, hiking and program activities for the advancement to First Class Rank.
Logistical Information:
- Meetings are held every Tuesday at 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran. Once a month only elected Scout Leaders are required to attend the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) where next month’s activities are planned.
- Dues are $350 payable to the Treasurer. Dues are paid annually at the beginning of the year or when new scouts join. Arrangements for payments can be made with the Committee Chair and Treasurer. AOL Scout dues usually start the month the scout joins the Troop activities.
What to do next?
- As soon as you decide that your boy would like to join Troop 525 please contact our Scoutmaster, Brent Mosbrook at brentm@socal.rr.com. Please provide the Pack Meeting date, time and location of the Cross-Over ceremony, as well as the Pack Leader contact information. We will arrange to send a Scoutmaster and Scouts to your ceremony.
- Attend the next Tuesday troop meeting and turn in the completed and signed scout and adult(s) applications to Dana Keller.
- All Parents are requested to take “Youth Protection Training” online at my.scouting.org and provide the certificate to Dana Keller.
What should I Buy?
- Scouts must arrive at all meetings in a Scout “Class A” uniform…no exceptions!(unless otherwise stated) Class B is considered a T-Shirt with the BSA Scout logo or Troop T-Shirt.
- This includes the tan scout shirt, green pants, belt, and socks.
- The troop will provide the neckerchief and slide at the Cross-Over ceremony.
- The troop will provide the troop number patch and handbook (if you haven’t already purchased one) upon completion of the applications.
- If there is a financial hardship situation please contact Dana Keller at your first availability.
- The scout will not be assigned a patrol right away. The Scoutmasters will assign the new scouts to a patrol around March or April when we have a full count of new recruits.
After we join…What should the scout do first?
- The scout should approach and request a conference with our Scoutmaster.
- As a scout parent, your role changes…you are now the “guide” or “coach” to encourage your scout to “follow-up” or “talk to…” to get a sign-off, etc.
- After their conference with Mr. Hallse, the scouts can start working on requirements towards First Class Rank. Only boys who hold the rank of “Life Scout” or above are allowed to sign-off requirements. Parents/Adults/Adult Leaders are not allowed to sign off.
- Words of Caution: Don’t get overly excited about merit badges. There is so much going on the first few months it will quickly overwhelm you and your young scout if you include merit badge events right away. All Eagle Rank required merit badges must be completed with our Troop Merit Badge Counselors, at Summer Camp, or at the Boy Scout Sea Base.
Summer Camp
- Annually the Troop attends a week-long Summer Camp. Usually, a group of 10 scouts and 3-4 Adult Leaders attend the 7-day event.
- In 2025 our Troop will attend Camp Big Horn from June 22nd to June 28th.
- We encourage all scouts to attend because this will be a great jump start to their next rank.
- This is not a required event.
